Laboratory of Art Psychology

WELCOME TO LAP

LAP

LAP – Laboratory of Art Psychology is a laboratory for interdisciplinary research. It is an incubator of experimental sets and methods, linking the arts, the social sciences and the humanities. Our objective is to develop new forms of experimentation in the artistic field, art publishing, graphic design, photography and interactive education. LAP collaborates with international universities, fine arts academies, public and private museums, galleries and collections, foundations, research centers and laboratories. The Laboratory merges avant-garde theories and technologies with the visual arts. LAP’s experiments enable the viewer to experience the work of art.

About

LAP - Identity.

LAP’s logo, its visual identity, is inspired by the work of psychologist Fred Attneave; work based on non-sense random shapes. Constantly changing and unpredictable, LAP’s logo takes the viewer on a never-ending cognitive trip.

Esperimenti di Deprivazione Visiva

Experiment performed at Musei Capitolini.

An experiment in visual subtraction was performed at Musei Capitolini in Rome in 2011, during the exhibition “Portraits: The Numerous Faces of Power”. Through a special drawing black box, the viewer had to draw the face of the marble sculpture without looking at his hand movements. The experiment was curated by Marco Marini.

60" Avatar

Esperimento svolto presso i Musei Capitolini.

6 eventualist experiments.

LAP’s first experiment at the Fondazione Camillo Caetani involved three portraits of an individual, done by three different artists over the period of a few years. We submitted questionnaires to 300 people in order to investigate aesthetic and psychological interpretations in the viewer perception of portraits from the XVIII Century.

MOS su Stimolo Stocastisco

Experiment on eye movements.

Eye Movements (EM) has become a central theme for Experimental Psychology in the 20th Century. Specifically, EM gaze paths were conducted on both representational and abstract artworks. But what if we observe a stochastic image? An experiment on a stochastic painting by artist-psychologist Sergio Lombardo allowed us to compare twenty “gaze paths movements” on an algorithm-generated image.

Organized at Musei Capitolini.

In April 2011, during the “XIII Edition of the Scientific Cultural Week”, the Congress of Psychology of Art was held at Musei Capitolini in Rome. The congress was dedicated to the “Contemporary Portrait, from Futurism to Eventualism”. This was the beginning of a long collaboration between LAP and Musei Capitolini, the very first public museum in the world.

ECEM 2017

19th European Conference on Eye Movements.

In August 2017, during the 19th ECEM Congress at Wuppertal University in Germany, LAP was invited to participate in a poster presentation. Thanks to LAP, we were the only Academy of Fine Arts invitated to ECEM, an important internationally recognized congress connecting scientific exsperimentation to contemporary art. At the ECEM Congress we collaborated, in brainstorming sessions, across multiple disciplines to develop new goals and methods in the Psychology of Art.
